Dear Student
Unisa has implemented a transformation charter based on five pillars and eight dimensions. In
response to this charter, we have placed curricular transformation high on the agenda. Curricular
transformation includes the following pillars: student-centred scholarship, the pedagogical
renewal of teaching and assessment practices, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and the
infusion of African epistemologies and philosophies. These pillars and their principles will be
integrated at both the programme level and the module level through a phased-in approach. You
will notice the implementation of this transformation in your modules, and we encourage you to
fully embrace these changes during your studies at Unisa.
1 INTRODUCTION TO THE MODULE
This tutorial letter is linked to the Management in the Foundation Phase module (MFP2601). The
module, which is a year module, is about management, leadership and governance in the
Foundation Phase. This document provides information regarding your formal assessment in the
module.
2 PURPOSE AND OUTCOMES
2.1 Purpose
This module is intended for students who are registered for the Bachelor of Education (Foundation
Phase). Qualifying graduates will understand the complexities of management and the different
levels of management pertaining to the Foundation Phase. This module explores various
organisational aspects that require thorough general principles underpinning school, classroom
and curricular management, the implementation and review of good management and
governance principles in general, based on the South African context. The module will help
qualifying graduates to understand and to contribute to effective school, classroom and curricular
management. The module helps to bridge the gap between school, classroom and curricular
management and practice by emphasising the importance of the sociopolitical context. This
module also focuses on the practicalities of developing a broad and critical understanding of
management and leadership concepts, theories and practices. The module will further help
qualifying graduates to understand the legal framework that governs the day-to-day tasks
confronting school governing bodies, managers and directors in the Foundation Phase in South
Africa.
