BIOS 242 WEEK 3 QUIZ (TCO 5) Chemical reactions that can proceed toward either anabolism or catabolism are called . glycolytic light-independent synthetic cyclic amphibolic Chapter 5, Other Anabolic Pathways (TCO 5) What is the role of an enzyme in a chemical reaction in a cell? Increase activation energy Slow down the speed of the reaction Halt the progression of the reaction Decrease activation energy Alter the shape of an enzyme’s activation site Chapter 5, The Role of Enzymes in Metabolism (TCO 5) Which of the following statements about glycolysis is correct? The majority of ATP produced during cellular respiration is produced during glycolysis. If an organism is growing on glucose, it must be using glycolysis. No ATP is consumed during glycolysis. The purpose of glycolysis is to split a molecule of glucose into two molecules of pyruvic acid. Glycolysis is also known as the Entner-Doudoroff pathway. Chapter 5, Glycolysis (TCO 5) The metabolic processes called fermentation . produce substrates for the Krebs cycle are alternatives for the pentose phosphate pathway occur only when oxygen is not readily available occur only when oxygen is readily available produce substrates for glycolysis Chapter 5, Fermentation (TCO 6) Sister chromatids separate and move toward the poles of the cell during of mitosis. telophase anaphase metaphase interphase prophase Chapter 12, Reproduction of Eukaryotes (TCO 6) Study of fungus is called . fungology mycology pathology toxicology mushroomoology Chapter 12, Fungus (TCO 6) Single-celled organisms called ciliates are . fungi protozoa insects algae water molds Chapter 12, Protozoa (TCO 7) Host specificity of a virus is due to . particular genes that it shares with the infected cell the presence of an envelope differences in size between the virus and the host cell the presence or absence of a cell wall on the host cell interactions between viral and cellular surface molecules Chapter 13, Characteristics of Viruses (TCO 7) The phenomenon of transduction is associated with which of the stages of a bacteriophage infection cycle? Attachment Assembly Release Synthesis Entry Chapter 13, Viral Replication Question 10 2 / 2 pts (TCO 7) How are prions different from all other known infectious agents? They cannot reproduce outside a cell. They act as slow viruses. They cause neurological problems. They can be destroyed by incineration. They lack nucleic acid. Chapter 13, Characteristics of Prions (TCO 5) Describe the mechanism of feedback inhibition and the role this process plays in controlling enzyme activity. Your Answer: This mechanism is you to sustain homeostasis. If a cell has to much of one chemical the process will be inhibited so you want have to much. And if there is not enough of the certain then it will increase production of that chemical. It is part of the negative feed back systems. the use of enzymes lower the activation energy. Chapter 5 Feedback inhibition is also known as negative feedback and end-product inhibition. In this mechanism, the product of a particular metabolic pathway inhibits an enzyme that catalyzes a reaction earlier in the pathway. For example, the end-product might be an allosteric inhibitor of that enzyme, binding to a location on the enzyme outside the active site. When the allosteric inhibitor binds, it changes the shape of the enzyme and prevents the enzyme from binding to its substrate. This "shuts off" the enzyme, and because the product of one reaction is the substrate for another, it shuts down the pathway. The inhibition is released as the amount of the end-product decreases. When this occurs, the pathway will be turned on again, because the cell again needs the end product. Therefore, feedback inhibition controls enzyme activity so that energy is not wasted.
