MOLECULAR ABSORPTION
SPECTROMETRY
1
, Introduction to Molecular
Absorption
• A spectroscopic technique used to
measure the absorption of radiation as a
function of wavelength.
• During this process, a sample is hit with
photons from a light source and the
frequency produced from the molecules is
recorded for analysis.
2
, How does MAS work?
• As a light source emits radiation towards a
sample, a portion of the light (photons) are
absorbed as they pass through
• The spectrum of light that is absorbed is
called the Absorption spectrum
3
, Introduction
• Molecular spectroscopy:
– Quantitative and qualitative analyses
• UV/Vis spectroscopy • IR Spectroscopy
