There are four classifications of diabetes mellitus namely type 1 DM known as insulin dependent, type 2 DM known as non-insulin dependent DM, gestational DM, and other diabetes secondary to other conditions. The body systems are affected by the insulin and contribute chronic hyperinsulinemia to the pathogenesis which worsens the high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, and coronary heart disease. According to Arcangelo & Peterson, 2013, hypertension, high plasma triglyceride levels, and low high density lipoprotein (HDL) plasma levels correlate with hyperinsulinemia secondary to insulin resistance and a worsened cardiovascular risk profile. Hyperglycemia symptoms include polyuria, polydipsia, weight loss, polyphagia, and blurred visionDiabetes and Drug Treatments 2 Drone IT NURS 6521 - Advanced Pharmacology Introduction “Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is the term used to represent a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of disorder characterized by abnormally high blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia) as a result of either insulin deficiency or cellular resistance to the action of insulin” (Arcangelo & Peterson, 2013).
