SEPTEMBER EXAMINATION 2021
Question 1
Discuss plagiarism and use examples where necessary.
Marks: [10]
Plagiarism is a very serious offence and in most circumstances it is harshly dealt with.
Plagiarism is committed when an individual takes someone else’s thoughts, ideas,
words, information or insights and then presents it as their own. If an individual uses
another person’s ideas and fails to give a reference then that person is committing
plagiarism.
If a person doesn’t give credit to someone, it is the same as pretending the relevant
ideas were their own. If a person fails to give a reference consisting of where they got
their information from this will result in them being penalized and disciplinary action
may be taken against them. The different forms of plagiarism include, when an
individual cuts and pastes information from a source into their work (i.e. Assignments
etc.) .This is the simplest form of plagiarism .The information can be word-for-word
from an article or book but is usually taken from the internet. Having too much of
quotes in an assignment is also a form of plagiarism. If there are approximately 15%
of quotes in an assignment, this will evidently show that the student hasn‟t understood
the content of their work well enough to put it in their own words.
