, INTRODUCTION

In my course work I will be doing a report that examines the features of a for-
profit and a not-for-profit business, looking at how each business is organised
and how their structure enables achievement of their aims and objectives. I will
be writing about two different Business Nike(private) and CAFOD(public) and
explain the features contributing to the success of contrasting businesses.

, In Greek mythology Nike means the Winged Goddess of Victory. The logo is derived from
goddess' wing 'swoosh', which symbolises the sound of speed, movement, power and
motivation.2 This is a powerful meaning which expresses Nike positivity and power
therefore this will attract customers and the more customers they receive the more
purchase will be made. This would benefit Nike as the revenue will increase due to the sales
along with its profit. Nike would not make a loss which would help them meet their aims
and objectives making them a successful business.

Nike is a private limited company.3 This means the shareholders are legally responsible for
the debts of a company only to the extent of the nominal value of their shares. The owner
of Nike is Phil Knight and the CEO is Mark Parker.4 In 2015, as a part of his success plan,
Phil Knight created Swoosh LLC, contributing 128.5 million Class A Nike stock or 15% of
the combined outstanding Class A and Class B shares at that time. In June 2016, a subsidiary
of Travis Knights' Trust acquired all voting units within Swoosh LLC in a private
transaction.5
