In Cary Joji Fukunaga’s 2011 Jane Eyre, based on the novel by Charlotte Brontë, the relationship between Jane Eyre and Mr. Rochester is doomed from the start. Mr. Rochester’s manipulation and lies. did not breed a good relationship with Jane. Mr. Rochester uses Blanche Ingram to make Jane jealous. Jane must suppress her feelings for Mr. Rochester at that point because she knows that they will not be together. Mr. Rochester forces Jane to witness his courting of Ms. Ingram when he has Jane sit in the parlor with Mr. Rochester, Ms. Ingram, and her friends. Mr. Rochester tries to control Jane because he is older than her and more experience than her. Jane is young and lives a sheltered life and Mr. Rochester used that to his advantage. Jane continuously fights back against Mr. Rochester’s manipulation constantly. When Jane finds out that Mr. Rochester is to marry Miss Ingram, Jane decides she cannot stay at Thornfield Hall. “…I have known you, Mr. Rochester and it strikes me with anguish to be torn from you…And become nothing to you...Am I a machine without feelings? Do you think that because I am poor, plain, obscure, and little that I am soulless and heartless?
