Tissue Plasminogen Activator (TPA): Contraindications, Side effects ● Used to treat ischemic stroke by dissolving the blood clot that is blocking blood flow to the brain. ● NOTE: No anticoagulant agents are given for the next 24 hrs after giving this drug ● Rapid diagnosis of stroke and initiation of thrombolytic therapy (within 3 hours) in patients with ischemic stroke leads to a decrease in the size of the stroke and an overall improvement in functional outcome after 3 months ○ The goal is for IV TPA to be given within 60 min. Of the patient's arrival to ER ● Contraindications: ○ Onset greater than 3 hours before admission (expanded to 4.5 hrs in some cases)
