SEMINAR 1: INTRODUCTION

Inclusivity The practice or policy of providing equal access to opportunities and resources for people who might otherwise be excluded
or marginalized, such as those having physical or mental disabilities or belonging to other minority groups. Challenges the

SEMINAR 2: IDENTITY, DIVERSITY AND POPULAR CULTURE: KEY CONCEPTS

Subjectivity The condition of being a person and the processes by which we become a person; that is, how we are constituted as
subjects (biologically and culturally) and how we experience ourselves (including that which is indescribable). Subjectivity =
how you make sense of yourself, can change through history.
Self-identity The verbal conceptions we hold about ourselves and our emotional identification with those self-descriptions.
Social identity The expectations and opinions that others have of us.
Socialization Process whereby the helpless infant gradually becomes a self-aware, knowledgeable person, skilled in the ways of the
culture into which she or he is born.
Social types Refer to things with which one is familiar, they serve the structure of society at many points.
Stereotypes Refer to things outside one’s social world, tend to be conceived as functionless or dysfunctional.
Stereotyping through Use of certain set of visual and aural signs which immediately bespeak <homosexuality> and connote the qualities
iconography associated, stereotypically, with it
Static structures Ideology and material conditions of the imagined or presented world, the place, time of context that a story is set, has
certain ideologies that are dominant in the context. Static structures can be used to stereotype people if they don’t really fit
in the context, stereotype people through a static structure (material world, context).
Dynamic structures Plot in which the character moves, acts, develops. Stereotype comes from the plot, the story that is been told.
Trans-coding strategies Taking an existing meaning and re-appropriating it for new meanings → if we have a problematic representation, how can
we challenge that without it being a stereotype?
Structural intersectionality Intersection of two identities makes actual experiences qualitatively different than those of people with majority identities.
Political intersectionality Intersectionality needs to be the fundamental basis for politics and policies.
Representational Cultural construction of people’s intersectional identities.
