Produce a briefing document for Tesco that could be used to help an
interview panel to guide them on employment law. Describe and explain
each of these laws and how they apply to Tesco.
Sex Discrimination Act 1975 and 2010
The Sex Discrimination Act 1975 refers to the prohibited sex discrimination within the workplace (sometimes
also referred to as gender discrimination at work). Since October 2010 this has been regulated by the Equality
Act. This legislation protects employees and workers (and anyone under a contract to personally carry out
work) from less favourable treatment as a result of their gender. Examples of sex discrimination within Tesco’s
who be a transgender woman is being treated less favourably then someone of the opposite sex, in
comparable circumstances, due to their gender.
Race Relations Act 1992
"The Race Relations Acts were introduced to provide clear laws that said that everyone in Britain had a legal
right to be treated fairly and equally, and that everyone had a responsibility to make sure that people abided
by these rules. I would refer this example of race relations to an employee working in Tesco’s as they may
endure racism from either their work colleges or customers.
Equal Pay Act 1970
The Equality Act 2010 is enactment which empowers anyone with explicit qualities to have equivalent rights
and assurance from separation and exploitation. Qualities may include: Race religion, sexuality, inability.
Examples of equal pay act would be Tesco’s ensuring that every single one of there employees are allowed to
have a voice and stand for themselves this is why the organization offers workers counselling.
Disability Discrimination Act 1997 and 2005
The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA) introduced new laws aimed at ending the discrimination that
many disabled people face. The Act gave disabled people new rights of access to goods and services,
education, employment, transport and accommodation. This, and other discriminatory legislation were
consolidated under the Equality Act 2010.For example it wouldn’t be fair for Tesco’s to hire somebody who is
handy capped and forcing them to work in the retail store warehouses because they will struggle to lift and
move items which is why hiring an employee with disabilities so be given an easier role.
European Working Time Directive
The Working Time Directive (WTD) is a piece of legislation introduced by the European Union in 1993. Its
purpose is to ensure individuals don't work too many hours in the interests of their health and safety. The
WTD was brought into UK law as the Working Time Regulations in 1998.For example Tesco’s hiring an elderly
man or woman to constantly work tremendous hours would seriously affect their health to work which will
lead to the organization firing them.
