Provisional Coverage
Definition
Protective covering worn temporarily while a fixed prosthesis is being
fabricated in the dental lab
Indications for provisional coverage
Reduce tooth sensitivity of the prepared tooth
Maintains the function and aesthetics of the prepared tooth
Protect the margin of the preparation
Prevent shifting of the adjacent or opposing teeth
Types of provisional coverage
Custom provisional
Prefabricated crowns

Maintaining tooth position
Week 6 - Provisional Restoration 1
, When a tooth has been prepared to receive a crown, sufficient tooth
material has been removed to create a space between the adjacent
tooth & the opposing teeth
A prepared tooth without occlusal/incisal & proximal contact may
migrate laterally or occlusally/incisally within a few days
Protection
When the tooth is prepared, the dentinal tubules are exposed to
potentially harmful thermal, chemical, mechanical, and bacterial effects
in the oral cavity
These opened tubules leave the pulp vulnerable to the effects of
temperature and the chemical irritants of the material placed
Materials must be compatible
Must be well-adapted to the preparation
Gingival tissue
Most crown preparations extent subgingivally, making the margins and
the overall contour of the provisional restoration critical to the
periodontal health
Periodontal tissue are susceptible to irritation from
Over-contour
Over-extension
