STUDY SKILLS
PROCESS OF ASSESMENT
Assessments are evaluations of you studying and knowledge taught
Informal assessment – spots tests or homework given to improve existing knowledge for formal tasks
Formal assessments – exams and cycle tests that are counted heavily towards a year mark (important to keep track
of these for exam prep)
REVISE STUDY SKILLS AND STYLE
1. REVISE STUDY SKILLS
• Flashcards
• Mind maps
• Summaries
2. STUDY STRATEGIES
• Study plan – due dates and break down time
• Study place – set up in own area where it is quiet to work
• Get organized – study notes/ equipment and labeled files
3. REVISE STUDY STYLES
• VISUAL – with sight – using pictures to represent topics
• AUDITORY – with sound, rhythm, or music
• KINAESTHETIC – putting topics in practice and study with movement
• VERBAL – to read, write and then speak – hearing yourself say the work
• LOGICAL – using patterns and connections to link topics as a way to remember
• INTERPERSONAL – working with other – study sessions (SOCIAL)
• INTRAPERSONAL – working on your own (INDIVDUAL)
4. EXAMINATION AND WRITING SKILLS
1) Read question – read carefully and understand what is asked – check mark allocation and underline the
key words
2) Plan the response – take time to think about how you are going to respond – write down your key ideas
into point form
3) Answer the question – focus on only answering what was asked – don’t write more than what is asked –
summarize points to save time

Formal assessments up until the end of the year
Usually counts 25% of final Gr12 mark (except L.O)
Moderated by the Department of Education and Umalusi – the Council for Quality Assurance in General and
Further Education and Training
WHY SCHOOL BASED ASSESMENT IS IMPORTANT
NB – tells you what you know and how much you still need to know
Helps you prepare better by keeping track of the information
Helps you obtain marks for a HEI (Higher education institution)
IMPROTANCE OF NATIONAL SENIOR CERTIFICATE
Key to further development and growth to lead to better opportunities
Helps with all applications – proof of skills and knowledge – basic requirement of many jobs
