Topic 7 DQ 1
Identify three major policy issues that affect the current state of health care delivery and
population health equity in the United States. What impact do these population health
policies and initiatives have on advanced nursing practice?
The health priorities and needs of Americans vary based on age, gender, race, and geographic
location, among others and these population group are as follows: including children,
adolescents, women, pregnant women, men, minorities, the elderly, rural residents, the uninsured
and underinsured, and veterans. One fluctuating issue that touches close to me as I am a veteran
is the homeless and unemployment rates of veterans. The U.S. Department of Housing and
Urban Development across all states estimated 47,725 homeless veterans in 2015 and 39,471
homeless veterans in 2016, a decrease of 17.3 percent between the 2 years (Baciu, Negussie,
Geller,et al., 2017). For the issue of unemployment the development of Veterans Sustainable
Agriculture Training Program (VSAT) was created collaborating with the U.S. Department of
Agriculture's (USDA's) aim is to help others achieve meaningful employment in sustainable
agriculture.
Second, President Barack Obama signed into law the Child Care and Development Block Grant
(CCDBG) Act of 2014 (Pub. L. 113-186) on Nov., 19, 2014, the first comprehensive
reauthorization for the CCDBG in nearly 20 years (NCLS, 2016). The reauthorization amended
the goals of the program and created six new goals that strengthened requirements related to
health and safety, licensing enforcement and quality of care. It also changed the plan cycle for
the Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) from a biennial to a triennial plan period. As a
result, the fiscal year (FY) 2016–2018 plan will cover a three-year period. A final
rule implementing the CCDBG Act and updating the CCDF regulations for the first time since
1998 were published on September 23, 2016. The rule applies to states, territories and tribes
