governance structures, and demographic characteristics of affected communities. Below is an evaluation
of five SIAs conducted by different South African environmental and social consulting firms.

The project is located in a peri-urban/rural Eastern Cape environment characterized by communal land
ownership under traditional leadership. KIIs with traditional leaders respect local governance protocols
and capture high-level community priorities. FGDs provided a culturally appropriate forum for residents
to voice qualitative concerns regarding blasting noise, dust, road safety, and local employment
expectations. Walkthroughs verified proximity to dwellings and local social infrastructure.
2. Cape EAPrac (Cape Estate & Environmental Assessment Practice)
Project: Midas Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Facility
Location: Carletonville, Merafong City Local Municipality, Gauteng
Primary Data Collection Methods Used:
o Telephonic and in-person semi-structured interviews with surrounding commercial
agricultural landowners and industrial managers.
o Integration of stakeholder comments submitted during the formal Public Participation
Process (PPP).
Explanation of Method Selection:
The development area comprises private commercial farmland and peri-industrial land near
Carletonville. Targeted semi-structured interviews with adjacent property owners allowed the specialist
to gather specific technical baseline data regarding site risks—such as veld fires, security concerns, and
traffic disruptions—without necessitating broad public community rallies.
