Unlike plants, fungi do not contain chlorophyll, so they cannot
make their own food. Instead, they obtain nutrients from other
organisms or dead organic matter. Because of this, fungi are
called heterotrophs.
, CHARACTERISTICS OF FUNGI
• Cell Type: Eukaryotic
• Number of Cells: Most are multicellular,
but yeast is unicellular.
• Nutrition: Heterotrophs (cannot make their
own food).
• Role: Most fungi are decomposers
because they break down dead organisms
and recycle nutrients.
