Topic: Self-Introduction
Method of Organization: Full-Sentence Outline
Specific Purpose: Introducing myself to my audience in this course.
Thesis: I am 25 years old, and this is my 2nd go around at finishing my bachelor's degree in
Business Management.
Introduction (this is where you start speaking): My name is Haley Radtke and I am from
Lebanon, Wisconsin but currently live in Iron Ridge, Wisconsin. I am also the first person in my
family to go to college. In my speech, I will be telling you about my career goals, my family, and
the obstacles I went through to finish my degree.
Capture Attention: Throughout my years in college, I lost myself due to re-occurring events.
Each event happened every time I decided to go back to school, I thought to myself did I lose
them because I chose school? I lost my best friend in 2015, my dad in the beginning of 2016,
and then my grandpa who raised me was diagnosed with stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer. He then
passed away in 2018. It has been quite a struggle trying to finish school on top of all these
events, but I am staying determined. I still constantly question myself if I should be going back
to school or if I should just stay put. Did these horrible events happen in my life as a sign I
shouldn’t have pursued this degree? All these questions race through my mind and sometimes I
don’t even know what to do.
State the thesis: At 25 years old I am taking the first steps towards switching careers. I know the
fight is going to be worth the wait and challenges.
Establish the Credibility: I caught a break in 2019 when I met my best friend and my partner.
Evan and his family pushed me to where I am today, graduating in 9 months is still unreal to me.
I finally got the push I needed and after losing my grandpa who was my best friend and mentor,
I lost who I was. I thought I wasn’t good enough and I am grateful someone believed in me the
way he did. I have always enjoyed the medical field and working with my hands, but I have
always had a passion for fundraising for cancer research. In hopes of graduating, I hope to be a
part of the cancer fundraising program and the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Preview the speech: I have always been a hard worker, and in the end, it was all right there in
front of me. I spent the last 6 years in the medical field working with patients to create this
backbone of opportunities. The more I pursued the healthcare field the more I wanted to do to
help people.
I. I went back to school to finish my bachelor's degree in business management.
A. I kept hitting bumps between affording school and life events.
