1) Abuse- If you suspect abuse do a full physical assessment on the pt.
1b). if pt. has a Pressure ulcer and non-ambulatory, this can be considered as a suspected abuse.
1c) Pt. must be turned Q2HRS.
2) Chronic Illness- PT who has venous stasis should sit with their legs uncrossed.
2b). All health issues later in life are all linked to chronic illnesses.
3) Death- The #1 priority when a pt. is dying is to give the pt. PRN pain meds to keep them
comfortable.
3b). administer morphine and give O2 to a Dying pt.
3c). Loss of social contact will lead to prolong grief.
3d) End- Of -Life care – encourage pt. & family to enjoy activities together.
3d) Dying patient with pressure ulcer- need to call the wound care specialist to look at the
wound.
4) Care giver stress – What is a normal care giver remark?

4b) Methods to show that they are handling stress well. – They need further instructions to deal
with their stress.
5) Recently Widow- Encourage the pt. to join a support group.
6) HIV- All HIV screening starts at the age of 18yrs old.
7) If an older adult keeps getting recurrent infection it is imperative that you do a test.
8) If a patient who recently retired states “ I HAVE BEEN FORCED OUT OF MY JOB” – they must be
given a referral.
9) Symptoms of Frailty – WT loss, self-reported exhaustion, weak grip strength, slow walking speed,
and low activity
10) Four dimensions of adult sexuality- All 4 dimensions need to be intact.
11) Dehydration means they have a chronic condition- e.g., Elevated temp.
12) IADL – Instrumental activity daily living.
13) Standard precautions – Must wear gloves at all times. (Should be practice at all times)
14) If a Pt. with arthritis says that to improve their sexual function, they will apply an ice pack before
sex is incorrect and would require further teachings by the nurse.
15) Geriatric Syndromes – falls and gait abnormalities, frailty, delirium, urinary incontinence, sleep
disorders, pressure injuries, malnutrition, sarcopenia.

17) Alzheimer’s pt. is most at risk for elderly abuse.
18) Complimentary therapy- Music therapy, playing something soft that the pt. is used to.
19) ELDER- ask them to tell their life story. Encourage them to pick up where they left off to keep
them actively engaged. (Continue their life story)
20) Elderly PT. with an infection – Change in mental status, delay activation of their WBC
21) Hard of hearing elder PT. – Talk in a normal tone with proper enunciation.
22) Ombudsman- PT need to know who they can contact.
23) Antibiotics in older adults- Diarrhea, thrush in the mouth.
24) Vaccines older Pt should receive- Pneumonia, Flu, HPV.
