Import Into Quizlet Instructions:

1. Sign in, then click the plus icon and select ‘flashcard set’.
2. Click ‘import’ then simply paste the following text into the
text box that appears:

Period, T when describing a circle/oscillation. Time taken for one
complete circuit/cycle.

Frequency Number of circuits/cycles/oscillations per second.

Radian Measurement of angles equivalent to the angle subtended by
an arc of equal length to the radius.

Angular velocity The angle swept out by the radius in time t (w=theta/t)

Simple harmonic motion SHM occurs when an object moves such that
its acceleration is always directed toward a fixed point and is proportional
to its distance from the fixed point.

Amplitude of an oscillating object The maximum displacement from the
equilibrium.

Phase of an oscillation wt + E (epsilon) where epsilon is the phase
constant.

Free/natural oscillationsFree oscillations occur when an oscillatory system
(such as a mass on a spring, or a pendulum) is displaced and released.

Natural frequency The frequency of free oscillations

Damping The gradual reduction, due to resistive forces, of the
amplitude of free oscillations.

Critical Damping The case when the resistive forces on the system are
just large enough to prevent oscillations occurring when the system is
displaced and released.

Forced oscillations These occur when a 'driving' force is applied to an
oscillatory system, causing it to oscillate with the frequency of the applied
force.

Resonance If, in forced vibrations, the frequency of the applied force is
equal to the natural frequency of the system (e.g. mass on spring), the
amplitude of the resulting oscillations is large.

Ideal Gas A gas that obeys PV = nRT. R = 8.31.

A real gas approximates well to an ideal gas.
