PSYC 412 CUMULATIVE FINAL EXAM QUESTIONS
WITH VERIFIED ANSWERS

Define emotion and explain each facet of the definition. - Answers - *Emotion*: a
subjective, biological, purposive (functional), and social phenomena.

1.) subjective (cognitive): everyone responds to different stimuli with different emotional
reactions.
-individual appraisals
-affect intensity

2.) biological (physiological): we innately show and experience emotions.
-blood in hands, legs, etc.

3.) functional (Darwinism/purpose): Darwin kind of had the theory that emotions were
adaptive so fear stimulates the physiological response of stress and lets us know "We
either need to fight or flight". Disgust is a natural reaction to food that our body is telling
us isnt probably safe to eat.

4.) expressive (social purpose): we use emotions, facial expressions, body postures,
and nonverbals to communicate with others.
-facial expressions
-body posture
-non-verbal language

Articulate how emotion relates to motivation. - Answers - -helps motives
-anger or interest can help you to act
-fear can cause you to act or not to act
emotions also give us feedback (operant conditioning) if we are mean and see that it
makes someone sad it will make most people feel bad and we will quit being mean.

Appraise the proposed answers to the question of "what causes an emotion, biology or
cognition?" - Answers - two systems view
1.) innate/immediate system (biological): responses to loud noises or sudden changes
in environment may cause an influx in hormones eliciting an emotional response
(fear/stress when a kayak flips)

2.) acquired/flexible system (cognition): after the initial hormones have worn off, an
individual has time to think and choose a rational response. (Kayak flips, you eventually
relax and then flip it back over)

, -Biology: infants display emotions, emotions can be induced physiologically (through
brain stimulation), facial feedback theory (if your body doesnt mimic your emotions then
people can tell your lying)

-Cognition: stimuli that are seen as irrelevant dont elicit emotion. so basically some
emotional responses can be controlled and learned suggesting they arent just biological

Identify the "basic" emotions and explain what constitutes a basic emotion? - Answers -
-basic emotions are innate rather than acquired.

-they arise from the same circumstances for most people

-they are express uniquely and distinctly from other emotions

-basic emotions evoke distinctive physiology pattern.

the 6 basic emotions include:
-anger
-fear
-disgust
-interest
-joy
-sadness

Differentiate between an emotion and a mood. - Answers - *emotion*: happen acutely
(seconds-minutes), at high intensity, very distinct onset, and cause can be easily
identified.

*mood*: very chronic (hours-weeks), at lower intensity, harder to define the onset, often
unknown what directly caused the mood.

overall: difference between duration, intensitym onset, and cause.

Define emotional intelligence and explain each faucet of the defintion. - Answers -
*emotional intelligence*: the ability to monitor one's own and other's feelings and
emotions, to discriminate among them, and to use this information to guide one's
thinking and actions.

-Self: appraise and express emotion at the right time, the right amount, and directed at
the right person. Knowing who and what elicits intense emotional reactions for you.

-Others: being able to recognize who and what elicit emotional reactons for others and
how to handle their emotionsin a healthy and productive way

Distinguish among emotions when given non-verbal exemplars. - Answers - match
faces to emotion.
