Digital literacy skills ensure that connecting people will form a deeper digital relationship and

allow a person to communicate effectively, understand context, and safely communicate, and

will enable people using digital communities to have successful interactions. Those skills also

include clear communication, critical thinking, technical skills, netiquette, online safety, and

cultural awareness to make those digital interactions positive ones. Effective communication

prevents a lack of misunderstanding and eliminates misinterpretation when tone and body

language aren’t present. For example, choosing the right words and communicating

information clearly during a online class discussion can smooth the engagement and raise the

stakes. Critical thinking is important, too, as it helps people figure out whether information

from a common article or a shared video is trustworthy prior to reposting it. With the tools

people do have, including the ability to use Zoom breakout rooms or upload an assignment

into Canvas, that conversation stretches out, and so does group work. Netiquette reinforces

authentic relationships with respectful behavior, not using all caps, responding thoughtfully,

and recognizing other people's ideas. Online safety abilities help people keep track of their

personal information, stay away from scams, and set healthy boundaries. Being culturally

aware, everyone has access to online spaces, and there’s an incredible spectrum of different
