📘 Periodic Classification of Elements & Periodicity in
Properties
📝 Part 1: Introduction, Need for Classification & Dobereiner's Triads
Chapter Overview
Periodic Classification is the study of arranging elements in a systematic way so that:

Similar elements stay together.
Studying chemistry becomes easier.
Unknown properties can be predicted.

🌟 Why Do We Need Classification?
Imagine two shopping malls.

🛒 Mall 1 🛒 Mall 2
Everything is arranged properly. Everything is mixed together in one huge room.

Toothpaste in one section
Finding even one product becomes difficult.
Vegetables in another

Cold drinks in another
Biscuits in another

Finding products is very easy.

💡 Chemistry Works the Same Way
More than 118 elements have been discovered. If every element is studied separately, chemistry
becomes almost impossible. Therefore, scientists grouped similar elements together.

This process is called Classification of Elements .

, 🎯 Advantages of Classification
1. Easy Study: Instead of studying every element separately, we study one element and understand
many similar elements.

Example: If we study Lithium (Li), we automatically understand many properties of:
Sodium (Na), Potassium (K), Rubidium (Rb), Caesium (Cs), Francium (Fr) because all belong to
the same family.

2. Easy Comparison: Classification helps compare elements easily.
Example: Instead of searching randomly, we can quickly compare Metals, Non-metals, Reactivity,
Size, Properties.

3. Single Glance View: All elements are arranged in one table. This helps us:
✔ remember elements
✔ compare them
✔ predict their properties without studying each one individually.

🧠 Biological Example: Just like Humans, Dogs and Cats all belong to Mammals. Although they are
different, they share many common properties. Similarly, elements in one group also share common
properties.

📌 Key Points:
✔ Classification groups similar elements together. ✔ It reduces the amount of study. ✔ Makes comparison
easier. ✔ Helps predict properties. ✔ Gives a complete view of all elements.

History of Classification
Scientists tried many methods before the modern periodic table. The major attempts are:

Dobereiner's Newlands' Mendeleev's Modern
Triads Octaves Table Table

, 1️⃣ Dobereiner's Triads (1829)
Scientist: Johann Wolfgang Dobereiner

Main Idea: Elements were arranged into groups of three. Each group was called a Triad .

Rule of Triads
The atomic mass of the middle element ≈ Average atomic mass of the first and third
elements.

Formula: Middle Atomic Mass = ½ (First + Third)

Examples of Triads
Triad 1: Alkali Metals

Element Atomic Mass

Lithium (Li) 7

Sodium (Na) 23

Potassium (K) 39

Check: (7 + 39) / 2 = 23 ✔ Correct

Triad 2: Alkaline Earth Metals

Element Atomic Mass

Calcium (Ca) 40

Strontium (Sr) 88

Barium (Ba) 137

Average: (40 + 137) / 2 = 88.5 ≈ 88 ✔ Nearly Correct
