1. For Case Study 1, I chose the “Fixes that Fail” systems archetype to explore the
ongoing homelessness crisis in Middlesex County. Faced with an urgent need to
address rising homelessness, the county opted for a rapid response: establishing
temporary shelters. However, these shelters were not designed for long-term
habitation, and the approach lacked a comprehensive strategy to tackle the root
causes of homelessness. While the shelters provided short-term relief, they quickly
reached capacity, creating a constant demand for land and resources. More
importantly, they failed to offer a sustainable path forward for individuals
experiencing homelessness. Escaping homelessness is rarely a quick or linear
process, and without long-term support, many individuals found themselves back
on the streets once their temporary stay ended. This reactive solution overlooked
the deeper systemic issues such as lack of affordable housing, limited access to
employment opportunities, and insufficient support services like transportation,
food, and clothing. Instead of investing in temporary fixes, the county should have
prioritized permanent housing solutions, job training programs, and wraparound
