How have you been? What have you been up to recently? Larry: It's amazing how much I've kind of learned from this school, coming here encouraged me to do a lot of stuff that I never would have gotten encouraged for, I mean I wouldn't encourage myself to do painting and... I did some when I was a kid, but then when I get to be older, I kind of left it aside. And then since the stroke, for that first four months or five months, whatever it was, everything was gone, everything. And when I would do, I've probably told you all the same stuff the last time I saw you but... I just couldn't remember anything. And I confused my son, one of my sons is the, probably my closest friend, and we see each other usually about once a week, or once a week in a half, and we talk about everything. He takes me places and we do things and that really helps keep me motivated. I couldn't do all of that without him. Or in the same thing with my wife, I mean it's just amazing how much care they give to me. My wife says she doesn't give me that much, but she does. And my son Chris, all my kids I'm close to which is amazing to me. Eight kids, and I'm close to every one of them, including my four and Maureen's four. And I didn't know any of the kids when I married Maureen. I just met them. And I think the youngest at that time was 3 or 4 years old. But we just, I don't know what it was, we just connected, every one of us. So my son and her sons get together and they hang out once in a while. And when we go somewhere, when I go somewhere and I'm going with 3/40 3/9/26, 8:16 AM Transcript Maureen's son, I might invite my son or let him know that we're going, and he sometimes comes. So the whole family, me or her and I, his kids and I, my kids and... SLP: You're very close to your family. Larry: It's amazing how lucky we are to have a close family. 24 seconds Tell me about how things are going for you at home. SLP: Let's talk a little bit about how things are going and maybe kind of where we're going to go from here. So we, you and I, have been working together for a while and you've been making really nice, steady progress. What are, do you, let's think of, I don't know, the last six months or even the last three months. Have you, are you doing more for yourself at home or how are things changing? Larry: Absolutely. SLP: Can you tell me a little bit about what that’s like? Larry: Well, as you know, Maureen's pretty busy and so I spend a bit of time alone, but I'm very fortunate. I have my son Chris and I have my other son that come to see me quite often. Chris more than anybody else. He's almost every week, once a week. And when different things come up, he invites me to go. So it might be, like the other day, we went to a cookout. Not a cookout, a cookout. That thing where, I'm saying the wrong word. It was just a thing where one of the companies that has us come different people come, like students, not students, people like me. They go to the company, they have a cookout. Not cookout, but a you go to the place and you can go swimming or you can go for a boat ride, at this particular company that comes once a week for the summer. And we went to that and we had a wonderful time, so there are things that I can do I can still do them. My son has if he's going to do anything, he invites me. And he takes me to things that... Like my brother, he's afraid to take me anywhere, he's afraid to take me in the water. He's afraid something might happen to me and he'd be responsible for trying to straighten it out and he's afraid to venture that route. My son Chris will do any darn thing. SLP: Let me ask you about being at home. So let's, let me ask you a few questions. Getting dressed, are you able to do that all by yourself? Larry: Oh, I do that all by myself. SLP: So, buttons, zippers? Larry: Buttons, zippers, pants. SLP: Picking out your clothes? All that? Larry: No, Maureen picks out the clothes. She puts them in a thing, in a bureau that we have with the spool. SLP: So she gets it all set up? Larry: She gets it ready so when I go there I strip and then I take my shower or whatever, usually a shower, and then I take and I get the clothes off a little chest that we have 4/40 3/9/26, 8:16 AM Transcript there. I get dried up and then I have a chair. And I get over into the thing and then get all dried up. And then get dressed myself. Takes me a lot longer than it would a normal healthy person that just jump in and gets dressed. Takes me a while. SLP: But you are doing it by yourself? Larry: But I do it all by myself. Absolutely. SLP: So, showering, shaving, brushing your teeth. Do you do that all by yourself? Larry: All by myself. It takes me longer, but I do it. SLP: Does Maureen have to remind you or are you on top of like I got to do that and you get yourself going. How does that go? Larry: I usually get myself going but there are sometimes when I forget something and Maureen will remind me. Like even with shower, she'll be, she'll have the door open, not open but unlocked. SLP: So she can hear you if you need her? Larry: She'll come in sometimes on her own for whatever and remind me that Larry you forgot this or you know you're supposed to do that. SLP: Now let me ask you a question. I know at home, you're doing a lot of art work and you keep yourself busy that way. Do you do any chores at home? Do you and did you ever? Larry: Not many. SLP: Did you used to before your stroke? Larry: With Maureen, not many. She does most of it and now... SLP: And it's been that way forever? Larry: Forever. SLP: Okay. Larry: Thirty years, but now sometimes what I'll do, like she does most of the work, there's no question about it. Sometimes I mess things up. I spill something or whatever and that annoys her. And I can understand why. But I keep trying to do better. And then what I'll do is, I'll go into the pantry when I see dirty dishes that she hasn't done yet and sometimes I'll do them myself. I'll wash the dishes and stuff. But I don't say nothing about it, because she don't want to hear about all the little things I do. But I try to do things so she won't have to do them. SLP: So you try to help out? Larry: I try to help out. SLP: Do you find yourself bored during the day or do you find yourself that you've got enough to do during the day to keep yourself busy? Larry: Well, in all honesty, I don't have time to be bored. If I'm home and I'm doing something with Chris, I'm all set. If I'm doing something with Mark, I'm all set. But if I'm alone, I'll do a lot of the stuff you saw today. That's what I'll do. Unfortunately, I can't just pick up something and draw it or whatever. I have to think about it a little bit and then I have to try it, and sometimes I mess it up, and I end up going on the other side of the paper or throwing it out. But a lot of times, I try my best to do a good job or a fairly good job at the drawing. I try to do as good as I can. Drawing, like the one thing that I did that I had the frame... SLP: That was very nice. Larry: I drew the frame around it. SLP: I like that. Larry: That took a little more effort on my part to try to get it somewhat square or straight. SLP: So is it fair to say if you spend time alone you kind of do your artwork and that's when you 5/40 3/9/26, 8:16 AM Transcript get... Larry: I do that sometimes. Remember you got me a thing with, or the art teacher did, with all the different paints and that. I did that today as a matter of fact. I don't do it as often as I do just regular drawing, but when I think of that, I try to get the paints and use the paints. I find that to be entertaining and I find it to be rewarding to me when I can do it with the paints. SLP: You like the paints. I like paints too. Larry: I like the paints. I like just the coloring with pencil, colored pencils and stuff. So it just depends, but I like to keep busy doing artwork.
