Step 1: Self- exploration.
This is the first step in the Career Invention Model and this is where you will be
exploring yourself and where your future self will be. You will be reflecting on who
you want to be, what you enjoy to do, where your talents lie and what your interests
are.
I will apply this to my own career planning process, I see myself as a business owner
in the future. I want to be financially independent and be the boss of a business
instead of being part of the rat race. I enjoy working for myself on my own time
schedule whilst leading other people and training employees. I am a good teacher
and I lead people by leading by example. I am a hard worker and always make a
point to keep doing what I love, that way, success is guaranteed.
Currently I own a small business where I make notes for school children and help
them with schoolwork. Because I know that my talents lie with teaching and working
hard, this small business has been a success since 2018 when I first started. This
business allows me to work on my own time schedule and make time for my unisa
studies. I enjoy training my employees on how to make notes and how to help the
school children. If I didn’t self-explore before I started this business, it would have
failed because I would not have enjoyed it as much.
Step 2: Exploration of career possibilities.
This is the second step in the Career Invention Model and this is where you will be
exploring the market availability to see if you want to start your own business or if
you will have to work under someone. This is where you will need to recognize
requirements for the career you want to be in as well as write shot and long term
career plans.
I will apply this to my career planning process by searching for the market
availability. I already know that I want to be a business owner instead of being part of
the rat race, so I will need to identify the requirements for me to own a business and
make a success out of it. My long-term goal is to have a successful business but my
short-term goals will be how I get there and the requirements and skills I will need to
obtain to make a success out of it.
By owning my own small business I have identified the lack of school learners being
lazy or don’t have enough time to make their own school notes. I have identified the
market availability and I started filling that market. All that I needed when I started
this business was the knowledge on how to make notes for school children and how
to advertise my services. Currently I have identified that I will need to hire more
employees to help me and this causes that I will have to learn how to properly make
pay checks and pay salaries at the end of each month or per unit. My short-term plan
is that I will need to educate myself on the requirements that comes with hiring
employees. My long-term plan is that I grow my business by hiring employees.
