, Abstract
Cloud computing provided by Amazon Web Services (AWS) is one of the creative solutions Don
& Associates has adopted to achieve its strategic goals. Through AWS, the company can have
access to a wide range of IT services provided on a metered, pay-as-you-go basis. For instance,
using Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC), Don & Associates can create and launch a web server
that will host the company server. To do that, we will have to create a VPC and additional
subnets, a security group for an EC2 instance, then configure and customize the EC2 instance to
run the web server, and finally launch the instance into the VPC. The process is simple and
straightforward but requires having the knowledge of IPv4 CIDR block, public and private
subnets settings. Providing erroneous information in the settings could prevent you from having
a successful web server launch.
Introduction
The purpose of this project is to provide Don & Associates with a preview of AWS capability
after the company’s decision to migrate from its current on-premises infrastructure to cloud
services. Adopting AWS as the Cloud Service Provider (CSP), Don & Associates can expand its
services beyond its current location while keeping the cost affordable. Additionally, the
migration will help the company avoid or lower the costs needed to acquire additional
equipment, find new locations, maintain, and operate the system. In this proof-of-concept
report we will provide a statement of need, the company’s current infrastructure, and a brief
overview of the services offered by the top three CSPs. To finish, we will demonstrate how Don
& Associates can use the AWS Management Console to create a VPC and additional subnets
within its geographical area and launch a web server to host the company’s server.
Statement of Need
Don & Associates is a financial consulting company that provide services to small-and-medium-sized
companies. Don & Associates is expanding its services and locations to meet company’s strategic goals.
However, the company is worried about the cost of acquiring additional equipment and is also
concerned about the maintenance and space. Looking for an innovative and cost-effective solution to
reduce the costs, Don & Associates was convinced that migrating from its current on-premises IT
infrastructure to cloud computing technology is the best approach.
Cloud computing is on-demand delivery of IT resources with pay-as-you-go pricing. Instead of buying,
installing, and maintaining on-premises IT infrastructure, a company can access its computing resources
(computing power, database, storage, applications, etc.) from a cloud provider on as-needed basis [1].
The resources run on the server computers located in large data centers in various locations worldwide.
Cloud computing has many advantages that can help the company meet and exceed its strategic goals.
✓ Elasticity. Ability to scale resources up and down to instantly grow or shrink capacity to fit
business needs.
✓ Agility. Faster access to a broad range of technologies that support innovation.
