Romantic Age of English Literature (1798–1837):
The Romantic Age of English literature began in 1798 with the publication of Lyrical Ballads by
William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. It continued roughly till 1837, the beginning
of Queen Victoria’s reign.
This age was a reaction against the previous Augustan Age, which focused on reason, rules,
and classical style. Romantic writers gave importance to emotion, imagination, nature, and
individual freedom.
