Locating and Appraising Research

Telehealth has been one of the cutting-edge features of modern nursing practice that

enables remote patient monitoring, speeds up access to care, and enhances patient outcomes. As

technology becomes increasingly synonymous with healthcare delivery, nurses have to learn

effective research and critical appraisal skills to enable application of valid, evidence-based

information. A person must look for credible sources via legitimate databases such as PubMed,

CINAHL, and the Cochrane Library in an attempt to support clinical decision-making. This

paper explores means of searching and determining quality telehealth research with emphasis on

how database literacy, critical appraisal, and evidence-based practice are able to advance the

profession of nursing.

Interview

A phone call interview was conducted with Dr. Dion Whitehead, RN, BSN, MSNed, FNP-

C, PMHNP, DNP (personal communication, October 8, 2025). Advanced practice nurse and

nurse educator Dr. Whitehead emphasized the importance of making use of credible databases

and current literature while looking for telehealth topics. He described his default resources as

the American Telemedicine Association, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the

Journal of Telemedicine and Telecare, and The New England Journal of Medicine. These

resources, Dr. Whitehead said, provide both policy guidance and peer-reviewed evidence to

guide the construction of nursing practice in telehealth.

Dr. Whitehead also discussed methods of appraising evidence. He encouraged prioritizing

research credibility, sample size, and study design over conclusions. He encouraged the use of

nursing students in applying Boolean operators as well as date limits in retrieving peer-reviewed

research that is most relevant and credible. His comments emphasized discrimination between

, quality evidence and poor-quality evidence as well as between database search that aligns with

research objectives. His perspective reaffirms that quality literature review is an ongoing process

that can improve the evidence base of nursing practice. Additionally, Dr. Whitehead noted how

telehealth studies are becoming more interdisciplinary and engaging between nursing,

technology, and policy arenas.

He encouraged nurses to look for not just randomized controlled trials but even mixed-

method studies with patient experience and provider feedback reported. He explained that quality

research must include results like patient satisfaction, reduced hospital readmissions, and cost

savings. Dr. Whitehead's remarks confirmed that evidence-based practice in nursing must stay

updated with the latest technology and that close scrutiny of telehealth data bridges the theory-

practice gap.

Locating Resources

Identifying productive sources on telehealth begins with a focused question of inquiry and

identifying appropriate databases. These databases such as PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane

Library, and PsycINFO are also well-known to be valid and comprehensive sources of peer-

reviewed health science literature. PubMed gives extensive coverage of biomedical and nursing

research while CINAHL addresses nursing and allied health fields (Oermann et al., 2021). Use of

advanced search features such as Boolean operators ("AND," "OR," "NOT") and Medical

Subject Headings (MeSH) terms increase the accuracy and relevance of searches. When making

assessments of studies, credentials of the authors, the reputation of the journal, and study design

are also considered.

Randomized controlled trials, meta-analyses, and systematic reviews are the best

information resources since they provide high levels of evidence (Agarwal et al., 2021).
