Nursing Informatics and the Nurse Informaticist
Nursing informatics (NI) is a field of study that integrates nursing science, computer
science, and information science to capture, encode, transmit, and procure data, information, and
knowledge in nursing practice. NI improves decision-making for all health care roles and settings
and has the overall goal of improving patient outcomes and promoting nursing practice (Hübner
et al., 2022). With the use of technology and informatics tools, NI enhances the speed, accuracy,
and quality of care.
The nurse informaticist plays a multifaceted role, with the goal of bridging clinical
practice and information technology. Nurse informaticists analyze workflow, plan and
implement health information systems, and educate clinicians for use of electronic health records
(EHRs). They also assist with analytics of data, quality improvement initiatives, and developing
evidence-based practices. Interestingly, they advocate for the incorporation of nursing
knowledge in system design to foster usability and patient-care (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2024).
One such well-known figure in the field of nursing informatics is Dr. Virginia Saba.
Referred to as an early pioneer in the field, Dr. Saba designed the Clinical Care Classification
(CCC) System, a standardized language used for the documentation of nursing care in electronic
systems (Xie, 2025). Her work increased the ability of nurses to quantify, capture, and analyze
patient outcomes, making nursing contributions more visible in healthcare information. In her
publications, teaching, and research, Dr. Saba has shaped the infrastructure of nursing
informatics to ensure that nurses' roles and interventions are properly reflected in health
information technology.
Thus, nursing informatics are instrumental in today's healthcare, and nurse informaticists
are key players in integrating technology into clinical practice. Visionary leaders like Dr.
Virginia Saba are the epitome of the power of informatics to revolutionize nursing through the
standardization of the documentation of care and enhanced patient outcomes.
Nurse Informaticists and Other Health Care Organizations
Healthcare organizations in the United States and around the world have seen success
with introducing nurse informaticists within their organizations. Evidence supports that hospitals
with nurse informaticists have lower technical problems with deploying electronic health records
(EHRs), improved clinical documentation, and improved patient safety outcomes (Javaid et al.,
2024). The understanding of both nursing practice and information technology by nurse

, informaticists allows organizations to bridge the gap between frontline clinicians and system
developers, reducing workflow interruption and supporting evidence-based practice.
In this case, nurse informaticists form the core in facilitating the collaboration of clinical
teams. They bridge the gap between the nurses and health IT staff to ensure technology supports
the realities of patient care. For example, nurse informaticists may lead training initiatives,
educating nurses to utilize the new documentation systems, in addition to gathering data to
improve usability and efficiency (Nashwan et al., 2025). This collaboration brings employees the
capacity to deliver quality and safe care without the burden of ineptly designed technology.
Informaticists also work closely with interprofessional teams, including physicians,
pharmacists, administrators, and data analysts. Through their involvement in quality
improvement efforts, they provide nursing data insights to inform patient safety programs,
population health initiatives, and clinical decision support systems (McGonigle & Mastrian,
2024). Their ability to interpret and communicate data as actionable interventions makes them
vital team members of patient-centered and team-based care.
Overall, the health care organization experience confirms the value of nurse
informaticists as change agents and collaborators. By facilitating communication, optimizing
workflow integration, and utilizing data for optimal purposes to enable clinical improvement,
they help interdisciplinarity teams enhance outcomes while propelling the quality and efficiency
of health care delivery.
Impact of Full Nurse Engagement in Health Care Technology
Full engagement of nurses with health care technology has far-reaching impacts on
patient care, information safeguarding, workflow, and organizational costs. Nurses represent the
largest group of health care professionals and their active engagement in the uptake, evaluation,
and optimization of technology assures that systems are tailored to meet clinical realities and
patient needs.
Patient Care.
With nurses being directly engaged in technology use, proper documentation, timely
communication, and better clinical decision-making further improve patient outcomes. For
example, nurse use of electronic health record (EHR) customization has been correlated with
reduced medication errors as well as enhanced care coordination (Naamneh &Bodas 2024). With
