Despite her unemployment, she possesses valuable sewing and clothing production skills and occasionally earns a small income by repairing clothing for community members. She has expressed interest in starting a small sewing business if she could obtain financial support and equipment. Mr Dlamini receives a monthly grant, which currently serves as the family's primary source of income. Although the grant assists with food and household expenses, it is insufficient to meet all the family's needs. The family has no savings and struggles to pay for transport, electricity and school-related expenses. Thabo completed Grade 11 and possesses basic computer skills acquired through a community youth programme. He has been unable to secure employment and has become discouraged after numerous unsuccessful job applications. Recently, he has started spending time with peers who engage in substance abuse and petty crime. Community members have accused him of theft, although no formal charges have been laid. Lerato is a Grade 10 learner who performs well academically and hopes to attend university. She frequently assists her grandfather and helps care for younger children in the neighbourhood while her mother searches for work. The family lives in a modest brick house built through a government housing programme. The house has electricity, running water and a small yard that is currently unused. Community members have previously discussed establishing vegetable gardens in the area to improve food security. The community has a primary school, a secondary school, a clinic, a library, a community hall, and a local NGO that provides social services and youth development programmes.
