Terms in this set (70)

density The amount of "stuff" you have in a certain
amount of space. Dens=mass/volume

Conservation of matter Matter cannot be destroyed. I.e. the ash and the
gas left from log being burned really adds up to
the original mass of the log

element Substance that can't be separated into simpler
substances by chemical means

,atom Smallest unit of an element that still has
properties of that element. An atom has a proton,
neutron, and electron

proton -positive
-located in nucleus
-mass is 1 atomic mass unit (AMU)

neutron -neutral
-located in nucleus
-mass is 1 AMU

electron -negative
-orbits outside nucleus
-mass is 1/1836th AMU (extremely small)

Balanced atom Has the same number of protons and electrons

Imbalanced charge/Ion Called an ion. It is positive or negative because
of more or less electrons than protons. A way to
remember this is that "ion" is a small word and
electrons are a small particle

isotope An atom with a different number of neutrons

Atomic mass The amount of matter that makes up an atom.
Found by adding up the number of protons and
neutrons

Atomic number Number of protons that the atom has

, Half life The time it takes for half the atom to disintegrate.
C14 (carbon 14) can be used to date organisms
that died less than 50,000 years ago

Periodic table -atomic number and mass increase as you move
left to right and top to bottom
-chemical properties are organized by column--
that go up and down

Compound Substance composed of two or more elements.
I.e. h2o co2, and NaCl

bonds What holds atoms together in a compound
-ionic: one atom loses an electron to form a
positive ion, and the other gains an electron to
form a negative ion (it's like one atom is chasing
the other atom around because it stole the
electron from it--this is how it stays together)
-covalent: atoms share one or more of their
electrons (both atoms wont let go of their
electron so it stays attached)

Pressure of the atmosphere The more pressure there is on something, the
more it wants to go towards being a solid. The
less pressure, the more it wants to be a gas. This
is because molecules like to move around and
when they move quickly, they create heat. When
there is pressure on molecules, they can't move
around as quickly, thus sea level keeps things
cooler than the top of a mountain hundreds of
feet up
