Medieval Age of English Literature
(c. 1066 – 1500)
Q#01: General overview of the age:-
The Medieval Age is the earliest major period of English literature. It begins with the Norman
Conquest of England in 1066 and ends around 1500, just before the Renaissance. The
literature of this age reflects religion, feudal life, heroism, morality, and social classes.
Historical Background:
England was ruled by kings and nobles under the feudal system.The Church was very powerful
and influenced all aspects of life.Education was limited, so literature was mostly meant to be
heard rather than read.
Three main languages were used:
● Latin – religion and education
● French – rulers and nobles
● English – common people
Main Features of Medieval Literature:
Some features of medieval literature are:
● Strong religious influence (Christian teachings, morality)
● Heroic ideals like bravery, loyalty, and honor
● Oral tradition (stories passed by word of mouth)
● Simple language in early works, later becoming richer
● Focus on knights, kings, saints, and common people
● Literature often teaches moral lessons
Divisions of the Medieval Age:
1. Old English Period (Anglo-Saxon Period)
(c. 450 – 1066):
This period existed before the Norman Conquest.
