Module 7 – Newborns Focused
Care
• Maintaining respiratory and cardiac function (PRIORITY), body heat

Respiratory
• Breathing must occur in order to transition to neonatal circulatory pattern
• Causes of respiratory issues o Decreased surfactant levels related to immature lungs,
severe or persistent hypoxemia/acidosis that led to continue increased PVR, failure or
the pulmonary vessels to fully dilate
• About 10% newborns require some assistance with respirations and 1% extensive
resuscitation
Circulatory System
• 3 major shunts o Ductus venosus-connects umbilical vein to inferior vena cava closes
• Foramen ovule o Opening between right atrium and left atrium closes
Significant neonatal hypoxia can cause it to reopen
• Ductus arteriosus o Connects pulmonary artery with the aorta normally closes within 15
hours of birth
Remain open or reopen when the lungs fail to expand, hypoxia occurs or PVR
increases
Thermoregulatory
• Neutral thermal environment o Maintains body temp with minimal oxygen consumption
and decreased metabolic rate
• Can lose heat by o Evaporation, conduction, convection, radiation
