QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS SURE A+
✔✔Transmission in the Salon, Barbershop and Spa - ✔✔Every service provided for the
hair, nails or skin require you to be in close contact with a consumer. In these situations,
viral, bacterial and fungal can be easily spread between clients and from clients to
licensees.
Beyond proper disinfection, these tips can help prevent the transmission of illness
causing pathogens:
Wear a mask when not feeling well
Wash hands or use hand sanitizer frequently
Never shake hands
Stay home when sick - fever, diarrhea and vomiting
Never work on open, raised, reddened or swollen areas

✔✔Other Infection Control Products - ✔✔During COVID-19 we saw many new products
come to the disinfectant market - two in particular were very popular:
UV Light
AntiMicrobial Sprays
UV light is not accepted for disinfection of a professional beauty business in any state.
While UV light may be usable for this someday, it is not acceptable today for
disinfection. AntiMicrobial sprays that advertise "killing for up to 90 days" are also not
allowed in any state to replace implement disinfection.

, While these sprays may kill or slow the growth of bacteria for 90 days, they only kill viral
threats for 1-3 hours and make no fungal claims.
Reminder: You must disinfect by the rules of your state which never include UV Light or
AntiMicrobial Sprays

✔✔How to Keep Your Salon, Barbershop or Spa Safe - ✔✔Provide hand sanitizer
throughout the business for use by clients and licensee's
Disinfect NON-porous items properly between clients
Clean porous items such as station chairs and couches - do not use harsh chemicals
such as disinfectants on these soft materials. Disinfectants will make this sealed safe
surface unsafe by drying the material and causing it to crack. If you are worried,
consider creating a barrier with a clean towel that can be replaced after each client.
Allow clients to cancel appointments without penalty - sick clients are unsafe clients
Allow staff to stay home without penalty when sick

✔✔Demonstrate, Display and be Proud of Your Commitment - ✔✔Encourage dialogue
with your clients by practicing infection control measures in front of them.
Display your BARBICIDE® Certified certificate to demonstrate the value you place on
providing safe services.
Discuss any signs of a health concern with your clients and recommend medical care
when appropriate.
Share the belief with your co-workers that taking the time to perform proper infection
control is good for your clients and your business.

✔✔Respiratory Droplet - ✔✔An infected person exhales the virus with every breath.
This can travel 6 feet when someone is simply breathing, but much further if they are
singing, yelling, coughing or sneezing.
This is one of the reasons for the 6 foot personal distancing recommendation

✔✔Person to Person - ✔✔Direct contact (hugging, hand shaking, kissing) between an
infected person and someone who is not infected is a known route of transmission

✔✔Symptoms of COVID-19 - ✔✔Symptoms generally appear 2-14 days after exposure.
Prior to symptoms you are still contagious and transmitting to others.
Fever (no specific temperature designated)
Shortness of breath
Extreme exhaustion
Non-productive (dry) cough
Diarrhea and vomiting
Muscle pain
Loss of sense of smell and/or taste
No symptoms at all (60% of cases)

✔✔Who is at Risk in your Establishment? - ✔✔EVERYONE! While the risk of dying
from COVID-19 is relatively low in comparison to the number of people who get the
virus, everyone is at risk of contracting the virus and spreading it to others.
