Where Can QMAPs Administer Medications?
QMAPs can administer medications in the following authorized settings that are regulated by
the Health Facilities and Emergency Medical Services Division (HFEMSD) within the Colorado
Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and the Child Services Division
within the Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS): - ANSWER Adult foster care

Assisted living situations and self administration - ANSWER In an assisted living setting, if
the QMAP administers some medications and the client self-administers other medications,
the facility is required to be aware of those self-administered medications and must have a
physician order for those medications that the client is self-administering.

offer assistance if needed.
Self-Administration - ANSWER Self-administration is the client's ability to take medication
independently without any assistance from another person. The client keeps the medication
in their room and there is no responsibility by the QMAP or the client to document self-ad-
ministration of medication; however, self-administration should be included in the client's
care plan.
Monitoring of medication... - ANSWER means reminding individual clients to take medi-
cations and handing the medication containers to the client. This includes handing the client
a medication reminder box, called an MRB, and observing the client self-administering the
medications by the proper route. The QMAP must document the observation on the Medi-
cation Administration Record (MAR) with the note "monitored".

All over-the-counter (OTC) medications are considered medications and must have a physi-
cian order. They must also be documented when administered and labeled with the client's
full name. Examples of OTC medications are Tylenol, Benadryl, and vitamins purchased at

A QMAP is NOT allowed to administer medications by injection, including drawing up the
medication from a vial or dialing the dosage of a medication pen.
Only a QMAP who administers medications in a developmentally disabled group home set-
ting is the exception, and this QMAP receives additional training.
A QMAP is NOT authorized to perform assessments or make judgments regarding clients
(whether administering routine medications or medications ordered on a PRN (as-needed
basis).

The first right of safe and accurate medication administration is to make sure you have the
right medication. - ANSWER Some medications have similar spellings but are completely
different. For example, Toradol is not Tramadol and Torsemide is not Furosemide. Pharma-
cists label prescription medications with the medication's trade name or generic name.

Trade vs generic name: - ANSWER The trade name is the patented name chosen by the
original manufacturer to market the drug and is specific to that manufacturer.
The generic name is the universal name that all manufacturers can use after the original pa-
tent for the medication has been terminated. It is best practice to write both names on the
MAR to avoid errors.
Every medication has a trade name but may not have a generic name.
The QMAP is required to compare the label on the medication container with the MAR how
