Pt has round stoma, lumen in center, 1.5cm protrusion, 90% stoma red moist one are
at mucocutaneous junction at 1 o'clock sllightly darker than rest of stoma mucosa.
What would your assessment of the slightly darker area of the stoma involve?
1. gently rub area that is darker to see if any blood is present in & around this area
2. scrub area to see if the dark area becomes red with the friction
, 3. drop lubricated clear glass tube into stoma lumen checking for color changes
4. tell the pt to check this area hourly for changes in the color

edema and the presence of sutures
2. yes..Gently rubbing the stoma in this area to see if the material used to
rub the stoma had pinpoint bleeding should indicate that there is good
perfusion in the area
3.never advisable to reub/scrub stoma mucosa to check for color changes.
stoma is edematous & healing taking place at mucocutaneous junction
use of lubricated clear glass tube is indicated when stoma necrosis (death
of stoma tissue) is suspected and lumen needs assessment
area and stoma need assessment every 8hrs for next 24hrs for any further
changes in color this is not the patient's
