QUESTION 1 Background: Gardner’s Theory identifies eight intelligences: Linguistic, Logical-Mathematical, Spatial, Bodily Kinaesthetic, Musical, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, and Naturalistic. Connell’s Questionnaire is designed to measure these intelligences in children by asking questions that reflect preferences, behaviours, and strengths aligned with Gardner’s categories. There are also other surveys or questionnaires to determine intelligences. No two children think and learn in the same way, and it is sometimes necessary to present information in a completely different light to reach some students. The theory of multiple intelligences confirms these empirical experiences and can provide 15 oaded_by lOMoARcPSD| educators with a framework and tools that will allow them to better meet the needs of the different types of learners present in every classroom. 1.1. Below is an example of the Connell Multiple Intelligence Questionnaire for Children (Brain-Based Strategies to Reach Every Learner © J. Diane Connell, Scholastic Teaching Resources) for you to complete. Put a mark next to each sentence that describes you. AREA 1 I like to listen to songs on the radio or a CD. A score of 3 to 4 indicates a moderate area. A score of less than 3 indicates a developing area. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.2. Reflect on the above multiple Intelligence questionnaire you completed. Consider the following: • Do you think the questionnaire is appropriate for your learners’ age, context, and learning needs? • How accurately will it identify your learners’ strengths and preferences? • Will you and your learners benefit from using this questionnaire to inform your teaching strategies? (6) 1.3. Find two additional intelligence surveys/measures/instruments appropriate for the learners in your classroom. • Provide the particulars of the instruments here. • Also provide the sources where these instruments can be located. (4) 1.4. How would you apply Gardner’s multiple intelligence approach to learning in your classroom by creating learning activities that appeal to your learners based on their particular strengths? Use the lesson topic: Looking After Nature. Provide five appropriate activities for each intelligence type. (40) Total: 50 marks

Heading: Application of Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence Theory in the Inclusive Classroom

QUESTION 1: Multiple Intelligences and Classroom Evaluation (50 Marks)

1.2 Reflective Analysis of the Connell Multiple Intelligence Questionnaire (6 Marks)

Appropriateness for Age, Context, and Learning Needs

The Connell Multiple Intelligence Questionnaire is highly appropriate for Intermediate Phase and lower
Senior Phase learners (ages 9–13). The linguistic style avoids complex psychological terminology, relying
instead on accessible, everyday operational statements (e.g., "I like to watch music videos on TV" or "I
enjoy putting puzzles together").

However, from a South African systemic perspective, the context contains minor socio-economic biases.
Mentioning specific technologies and hobbies such as "CDs," "computer games," "zoos," or "aquariums"
assumes an urban, well-resourced background. In under-resourced or deep rural contexts, educators
must adapt these terms to local equivalents (e.g., listening to community radio, playing outdoor
indigenous games, or observing local livestock) to ensure the questionnaire effectively assesses
intelligence rather than environmental privilege.

Accuracy in Identifying Strengths and Preferences

This instrument serves as a highly accurate screening tool for identifying a learner's subjective
preferences and behavioral tendencies, rather than measuring raw cognitive capacity. By focusing on
observable habits, it bypasses the anxieties associated with formal assessment tasks.

Because children naturally gravitate toward activities that align with their underlying neurological
strengths, mapping these self-reported high-scoring areas provides a reliable profile of their preferred
learning styles and dominant intelligences.

Benefits for Informing Teaching Strategies

Both educators and learners stand to benefit significantly from this questionnaire:

 For the Educator: It shifts the classroom practice away from a traditional, restrictive "one-size-
fits-all" teaching approach. It provides actionable baseline data to differentiate lessons, design
flexible group work, and create multi-modal assessments.

 For the Learners: It nurtures self-reflection and builds academic confidence. Learners discover
that struggling with traditional written text (Word Smart) or mental arithmetic (Math Smart)
does not mean they lack intelligence; instead, they might possess highly developed spatial,
musical, or naturalistic capabilities. This supports their overall emotional well-being and sense of
belonging.

1.3 Identification of Two Additional Intelligence Surveys/Instruments (4 Marks)

Instrument 1: The Multiple Intelligences Checklist for Kids (Armstrong's Model)
