Section 1: The Scientific Method
1. Explain the scientific method. Identify the origins of this method and provide examples of its
application to solve real-world problems. Also, describe why this method ensures a sound
analysis of data.

The scientific method is an empirical approach to obtaining knowledge and making new findings

or discoveries (Voit, 2019). It entails several steps to objectively ascertain facts and observations

through testing and experimentation. Many people consider the scientific method as the

cornerstone of modern science. The scientific method dates back to the 16th century and Francis

Bacon is viewed as the father or originator of the scientific method ( Sharma, 2022). He

recommended a new integrated approach of shared data gathering and empirical

experimentation for humanity to improve itself and discover things. Bacon advocated for a

detailed and systematic empirical study to improve humanity's comprehension of nature and

address real-life issues. For instance, the scientific method played a key role in addressing the

COVID-19 pandemic. Through scientific methods, people were able to understand how

coronavirus was spread and ways to prevent and control its prevalence across the world (Taylor

et al., 2020). Moreover, researchers were able to develop diagnostic tools and drugs to manage

the pandemic. Through thesis testing, observation, experimentation, and examination, the

scientific method was essential in addressing the pandemic and preparing for future public health

issues. Moreover, after the United States experienced the polio crisis, Enter Jonas Salk utilized

the scientific method to develop the polio vaccine. We also apply the scientific method in our

daily lives, for instance, if one loses his car keys, he can formulate a hypothesis of all possible

, locations, and inspect each area until he finds the car keys (Taylor et al., 2020). If a bulb is not

working, hypothesize that it is not working and carry out a test if another new bulb can work.

The scientific method guarantees sound and effective data analysis or inquiry by making

observations, inquiring suitable questions, formulating a theory, forecasting, performing

experiments, and examining the outcomes (Taylor et al., 2020). It ensures a sound data analysis

to allow theories to be tested without any bias and examination to happen without any preceding

details to affirm the data and outcomes presented. Hypotheses are tested utilizing cause and

effect and the outcomes with either refute or support the hypothesis.

2. Define the process or steps in the scientific method. Describe the typical activities that would
happen in that step or probes. Describe the objective of each step and the typical activities or
tasks for that step.

The scientific method comprises six main steps. The first step is making an observation, which

entails noticing an interesting feature or a problem to solve. It aims at identifying a question or

problem (Sharma, 2022). The second step is formulating a question regarding the observation.

This step aims to establish a testable inquiry that aligns with the initial observation. Forming a

hypothesis is the third step and it seeks to answer the formulated question. Deriving a prediction

from the hypothesis is the fourth step (Taylor et al., 2020). The main aim of this probe is to make

sure the prediction is consistent and clear to eliminate nuances. Testing the prediction forms the

fifth step, which aims to collect data and experiment to address the hypothesis. The final step is

concluding and determining if the evidence refutes or supports the hypothesis. If the findings are

clear, they can be shared with other individuals and if they are unclear, the researcher must

improve their procedure (Sharma, 2022). Therefore, the scientific method is used in different
