Exposes body tissue to effects of drug

Drug Idiosyncrasy. ANSWER -any unusual or abnormal response that differs from the
response normally expected to a specific drug and dosage- Example= sleeping pills make

Cumulative Effect. ANSWER -condition that occurs when the body cannot metabolize a
drug before additional doses are administered

Toxic Reaction. ANSWER -Occurs with increased dose of meds or when blood
concentration levels exceed therapeutic level. Example- kidneys not working properly so
can't excrete or liver not metabolizing meds properly. Nurse= maybe monitoring blood
levels. Should know s/s of toxicity with certain drugs. Report toxic levels to MD

Factors influencing drug response. ANSWER -Age, weight, sex, disease, route of
administration

Nursing Implications about drug administration. ANSWER -Be knowledgeable about
meds. When in doubt. Seek help-

Drug errors. ANSWER -any incident in which a patient receives the wrong dose, wrong
drug, drug by the wrong route, or drug given at the wrong time- notify MD first. Happens
with you don't question I clear orders. Do not verify calculations. ALWAYS listen to pt.
They know what their meds look like and may question unusual pills. ONE TASK AT A
TIME! ONE PT AT A TIME

General principles of drug administration. ANSWER -Always know about drug giving,
reason you are giving, action, common adverse reactions, precautions in administration, and
normal doses give.
