Interviewin
g and 1. Use appropriate listening, questioning and advising
Advising techniques to:
Begin the first interview with a client;
Identify the client’s goal and establish the client’s
concerns;
Elicit relevant information to establish the client’s
preferred means of reaching those goals, taking account
of benefits and risks;
Conduct the interview in a way which maintains rapport
and a professional relationship with the client; and
Conclude the interview with a clear agreement on action
to be taken by both the client and the trainee solicitor
2. Plan, prepare for, and conduct, an interview using a
structured approach
3. Make a contemporaneous record of the interview, including
any advice given
