Introduction
I will be discussing 3 case studies regarding providing support for
individuals in the community and anti-discriminatory practice. For case
study 1 I will be discussing Alice Fernandez who is a 74-year-old woman
who has recently lost her husband due to cancer of the liver, Alice is also
an alcoholic and rather than spending her pension on healthy food, she
is spending it on her drinking habit. Along with this, she is on anti-
depressants, however, the anti-depressants are making her lethargic,
this could be because of her mixing alcohol with her the anti-
depressants, or they may not be the correct suit for her. Alice attends an
over-65s aerobics class at the centre, however, the manager of the
centre says Alice is causing distress to the trainer and the other class
members due to her frequently smelling of alcohol. The manager then
said she can attend the class if she stands away from others.
For case study 2 I will be discussing Brenda Grey who is a 58-year-old
woman who lives alone in sheltered accommodation, Brenda has mental
health issues and severe asthma; she often forgets to take her
medication due to her mental health issues. Brenda attends a life skills
class at the centre, the manager from the centre met with Brenda’s GP

, to express Brenda’s concerns about her mental ill health, as Brenda
believes she needs to receive more medical support.
Finally, in case study 3 I will be discussing Martin Smithers who is a 45-
year-old man who has recently been made redundant from his factory
job and is finding it difficult to find a new occupation. Martin is also
finding it increasingly difficult to find the money for household bills and
fears he may be evicted from his apartment. Martin attends a carpentry
class at the centre however he is finding it difficult to attend due to the
stress of his money issues his chronic skin condition has become
increasingly worse.

Anti-discriminatory practice
Anti-discriminatory practise is when someone or a workplace gives equal
opportunities to all workers and employees, such as a woman should be
able to be the head of a department even though she could become
pregnant and need maternity leave. Along with this health and social
care workers should address their prejudice and report any
discrimination that they see or hear. Health and social care workers
should recognize the needs of people from different backgrounds this
could be different religions, cultures, races or beliefs. Workers who use
anti-discriminatory practice use non-discriminatory language, (not being
sexist, racist, etc.), view service users as diverse and different, and treat
people as equal value regardless of their characteristics. The anti-
discriminatory practice could be implemented at the centre in the case
studies, by providing the correct training for the club workers and
trainers, such as, how to acknowledge alcoholism and how to support
someone abusing alcohol (such as Alice). There could also be visual
posters placed around the centre stating what discrimination is, and how
to report it. Along with this, there could be an anonymous report box in
place for victims to find support.
In case study one, it is clear that Alice could be a target for
discrimination. Discrimination is when someone has a prejudice against
a person or a group of people, this would be against Alice, either for her
health problems, alcoholism, age, or sex. In my opinion, the centre
trainer suggesting Alice being excluded to the side of her aerobics class
is not a good solution as Alice is then being isolated from the group
which can result in her feeling extremely lonely which can cause herself
to be distressed and would not help her depression. However, taking into
account the safety and happiness of the other attendees (using non-
maleficence) the manager of the centre accompanied Alice to her
medical appointments about the anti-depressants, loss of her husband
and alcohol problem. These are good steps due to Alice being involved
