1. Definition
Care of adult patients with medical conditions or undergoing surgery.
2. Preoperative Care
- Informed consent - Patient assessment - NPO 6–8 hours - Remove personal items - Psychological
support
3. Postoperative Care
- Monitor ABC - Check vital signs - Pain management - Wound care
4. Postoperative Complications
Respiratory: Atelectasis, Pneumonia Circulatory: DVT Wound: Infection, bleeding, dehiscence
5. Fluid & Electrolyte Balance
Dehydration: dry mouth, low urine Overload: edema, high BP, breathing difficulty
6. Pain Management
- Pain scale (0–10) - Analgesics - Positioning & relaxation
7. Infection Control
- Hand hygiene - Sterile technique - Signs: fever, redness, pus
8. Wound Care
- Sterile cleaning - Observe color, odor, drainage
9. Common Conditions
Hypertension: BP >140/90 Diabetes: high blood sugar Shock: low BP, fast pulse
10. Emergency Care
- ABC - Oxygen - IV fluids - Call for help
