INTRODUCTION

Community psychology focuses on improving the well being of individuals and communities
by promoting collaboration, social justice and meaningful participation in social change. This
assignment examines two community engagement initiatives conducted by the Inside-out
Outside-in South African Corrections Interest Group at the University of South Africa. These
initiatives include the collaboration with teachers at St Albans Correctional Centre during the
International Teacher’s Day celebration and the fatherhood support group established at
Zonderwater Correctional Centre. The assignment discusses the principles of community
psychology and explains how these principles are reflected in the collaborative work of the
Inside-out group. It also considers possible suggestions that may strengthen these initiatives
and improve their impact on communities involved in correctional environments.

SECTION A: PRINCIPLES OF COMMUNITY PSYCHOLOGY

Empowerment

Empowerment focuses on helping individuals and communities gain control over
their lives by promoting participation, access to resources and the ability to make
decisions that improve their well being.

Respect for Diversity

Respect for diversity recognises that people have a right to be different and that
community programmes must value and include different cultures, identities and
experiences within a community.

Oppression and Power

This principle highlights the need to identify and challenge inequality and unfair
power relations in society so that all community members can experience social
justice and equal opportunities.
