WGU C206 EHM2 TASK1:
Examining Ethical Leadership

, EHM2 Task 1

A. The nonfictional leader who shows excellent ethical performance is Barrack
Obama. According to Wikipedia, "Barack Obama II is an American politician and
lawyer who served as the 44th president of the United States. “

1. Two ethical characteristics that Barrack Obama demonstrates are
Integrity and Respect.
Integrity is defined as “a person's quality of being honest and having strong
moral principles, and consistently acting by those values.” (huberts,2018)
Throughout his campaign and presidency, Barack Obama showed integrity by
fighting hard to keep his word on promises such as healthcare and taxes.
Respect can be defined as “due regard for the feelings, wishes, rights, or
traditions of others." Obama is known for respecting his peers, subordinates, and
the public. An example of Barrack Obama demonstrating and asking for respect
is during a distressing time during his presidency when there was tension
between police officers and civilians. PBS wrote an article that states, "President
Barack Obama called Sunday for greater tolerance, respect and understanding
from police officers toward the people they take an oath to protect as well as
from individuals who think the police are too heavy-handed and intolerant,
particularly toward people of color.” (Madrid,2016)

2. Barrack Obama has exhibited ethical conduct by repealing "Don't ask, Don’t tell.”
Don't Ask, Don't Tell gave equal rights to a community in the military that was
outcasted because of their sexual preferences. Before this repeal, thousands of
soldiers were discharged from the military for their open display of
homosexuality.

B. A Deontological perspective judges actions based on whether they follow a set of
rules or duties rather than the consequences of those actions. A Consequentialist
perspective judges actions based on the consequences of those actions.

Deontology is an ethical theory that considers actions based on rules and
intentions rather than the consequences of those actions. This means that
deontologists believe that “individuals have a moral obligation to follow certain
rules and duties, even if it means sacrificing potential benefits or causing harm in
specific situations.” (Treviño, 2024) When studying deontology in Chapter 2,
"Deciding What is Right," I stumbled across a few sentences that made me think
about the scenario differently. The passage said that "according to some
deontological approaches, certain moral principles are binding, regardless of the
consequences and that knowing what values are important to you and how you
prioritize them is an important first step toward understanding and applying this
approach.” Coming from an urban background I correlate a nondisclosure
agreement with the principle of “no snitching.” This binding moral principle
states that whether the outcome of a situation someone signs up for is good or
bad, they do not reveal information that could harm them, themselves, or anyone
involved. Using this logic from a deontologist's point of view means that though
they feel they have a duty to divulge
