A COMMUNITY PSYCHOLOGY INTERVENTION TO ADDRESS YOUTH GANG
VIOLENCE IN SESHEGO TOWNSHIP, LIMPOPO

INTRODUCTION

Communities often face social problems that affect the wellbeing and safety of the people
who live in them. In many South African communities, challenges such as violence, poverty,
substance abuse, and lack of support systems make everyday life difficult for many families.
Community psychology encourages people to look at these challenges not only as individual
problems but as issues that are shaped by social conditions and community environments. It
also promotes collective action and empowerment so that communities can work together to
improve their living conditions (Nelson and Prilleltensky 2010).

In my own community, I have noticed that many people struggle to access emotional support
when they experience difficult situations such as family conflict, unemployment, or gender
based violence. Many individuals feel isolated and do not know where to seek help.
Observing these struggles has made me realise how important community support
structures are. This assignment reflects on a challenge within my community and Terms of use

structures are. This assignment reflects on a challenge within my community and explores
how community psychology principles can guide a small intervention project aimed at
supporting vulnerable members of the community and strengthening social support
networks (Seedat, Duncan and Lazarus 2001).

CHALLENGE IN MY COMMUNITY

The community I focus on is Seshego township in Polokwane, Limpopo Province.
Seshego is a large township located just outside Polokwane and many families in this area
experience social and economic challenges such as unemployment, poverty, and limited
recreational opportunities for young people. These conditions often create environments
where young people become vulnerable to risky behaviour. One of the most serious
challenges currently affecting the community is gang related violence among youth.

In many parts of Seshego, groups of young people have formed informal gangs that
engage in violent behaviour, intimidation, and criminal activities. These gangs are often
involved in fighting with rival groups, substance abuse, theft, and harassment of
