Mid Tudor Crisis
What was it

- 1547 = H8 died
- Son Edward was only 6, had regency council ruling for him but Somerset
(1547-1549) + Northumberland (1550-1553) were mostly in charge
- Edward raised as a Protestant - but most of population were Catholic so reforms did
not go down well
- 9 day Queen Lady Jane Grey
- 1553 = Mary I, counter-reformation

Edward

Duke of Somerset - elder brother of Jane Seymour, Edward’s Uncle
- Originally member of regency council, but rose to power 1547 and gave himself title
of Lord Protector
- Known as the “Good Duke” because of his care for the poor
- Failure of FP = rough wooing of Scotland trying to force a marriage between Edward
and Mary QoS carried on, risk of French invasion from S with 10,000 French troops
landing in Scotland + they lost Boulogne to the French
- Caveat: decisive victory at Pinkie Cleugh 1547 against a much larger Scottish
army, H8 did start the war + Union between Scotland + England was in the
national interest
- Economic collapse = debasement of coinage to fund war in Scotland, rise in pop
meant prices shot up + common people suffered
- Caveat: debasement of the coinage added half a million pounds to the royal
coffers, Somerset couldn't have foreseen a rise in populations
- Rebellions = Prayer Book Rebellion 1549 after English language Bible was enforced
with around 7000 rebels reaching Devon, Somerset had to hire in German + Italian
mercenaries to subdue them
- Caveat: rebels were far from London + quickly defeated by royal forces,
5,500 rebels killed which was far fewer than in Pilgrimage of Grace with
40,000 closer to London
- Ketts Rebellion in East Anglia 1549 against enclosure policy that crown had put in
place to increase their revenue, much closer to London + recruited 16,000 men to
fight
- Caveat: enclosure already started to increase under H8, rebels defeated at 2
decisive engagements before they reached London

Duke of Northumberland - distinguished himself ay Pinkie Cleugh and personally crushed
the Kett Rebellion
- Upusred Somerset as Lord Protector
- Known as the “Bad Duke” because many of his policies served to enrich the landed
elite
