ZOL2601 Assignment 2 (COMPLETE ANSWERS) Semester 1 2026 - DUE 23 March 2026; 100% TRUSTED Complete, trusted solutions and explanations. For assistance, Whats-App 0.8.1..2.7.8..3.3.7.2... Question 1 [8] Various factors influence the amount of gas that can dissolve in water. Name and briefly describe the direction of influence of the four main such factors discussed in the learning material. Question 2 [6] Describe the role of skin in respiration. Question 3 [8] Draw a fully labelled diagram (that you draw yourself) illustrating differences in oxygen dissociation curves of blood of mammals of various sizes. Explain the differences. Question 4 [12] 4.1. Use Henry’s Law to calculate the quantity of oxygen in a large bucket of fresh water (volume of 200 l) at two different altitudes, namely 100 metres and 2,500 metres above sea level (m.a.s.l). Assume the partial pressure of O2 at 100 metres m.a.s.l. to be 157 mmHg and at 2,500 m.a.s.l. m to be 117 mmHg respectively and a temperature of 15°C for both scenarios. (8) 4.2. How long will it take a rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) of 600g to consume all the oxygen in the bucket for each of the scenarios, if it consumes oxygen at a rate of 100 ml/kg of fish per hour? Assume the amount of oxygen is not replenished during the experiment. (4) Question 5 [8] Discuss airflow through bird lungs, and the benefits of structural adaptations unique to bird respiration. You may include a diagram to aid your discussion. Question 6 [8] Make use of a simple, annotated line diagram that you draw yourself to (1) illustrate the E. Newton Harvey principle.

QUESTION 1

Several factors influence the amount of gas that can dissolve in water. These factors
determine how easily gases such as oxygen or carbon dioxide dissolve in biological fluids.

1. Partial pressure of the gas

The amount of gas that dissolves in water increases as the partial pressure of the gas
increases. When the pressure of a gas above the liquid is higher, more gas molecules move
into the liquid until equilibrium is reached. Therefore, higher partial pressure leads to greater
gas dissolution.

2. Temperature of the liquid

Temperature has an inverse effect on the solubility of gases. As the temperature of the liquid
increases, the solubility of gases decreases. This happens because gas molecules move
more rapidly at higher temperatures and escape more easily from the liquid.

3. Surface area of contact

The larger the surface area between the gas and the liquid, the greater the amount of gas
that can dissolve. A larger surface area allows more gas molecules to come into contact
with the liquid at the same time, which increases the rate and amount of dissolution.

4. Nature or solubility of the gas

Different gases dissolve in water at different rates depending on their chemical properties.
Some gases, such as carbon dioxide, dissolve more easily because they react chemically
with water to form compounds like bicarbonate ions.

QUESTION 2

The skin plays an important role in respiration in certain animals. This process is known as
cutaneous respiration. In this type of respiration, gases such as oxygen and carbon
dioxide are exchanged directly through the skin.
