PSYC 140 Module 8 Exam

1. Philip is about to celebrate his 80th birthday. He's fond of saying,
"It's all downhill after 75!" Which of the following socioemotional
theories of aging best fits the meaning behind what he is saying:

Disengagement
Activity
Selective Optimization with Compensation

Answer:

Disengagement

1. Compare and contrast the three theories discussed in this section.

Answer:

Disengagement theory discusses Cumming and Henry's views that older
adults should prepare for death by removing themselves from society and
pulling away from social situations. They believed that the older adult would
be more happy if they did so. Activity theory states the exact opposite. This
theory states the more active the older adult is, the more they will be
satisfied with life. Early retirement and decreased physical activity are

, detrimental. They should find ways to be socially and physically active.
Selective Optimization with Compensation theory states aging successfully
combines all three subsets of the Selective Optimization with
Compensation Theory, selection (the activities older adults choose to do),
optimization (maintaining what the elder can do using practice), and
compensation (the older adult must compensate for activities, i.e. resting
during physical activity, driving more slowly).

2. Reflection question: What does it mean to age successfully?

Answer:

Aging successfully combines all three subsets of the Selective Optimization
with Compensation Theory, selection (the activities older adults choose to
do), optimization (maintaining what the elder can do using practice), and
compensation (the older adult must compensate for activities, i.e. resting
during physical activity, driving more slowly).

1. How would you answer the question, "What is death?"

Answer:

I would define death as being the complete cessation of activity in the brain
as well as the brain stem.

2. A friend is grieving the loss of a loved one. She is angry at the local
hospital and feels that more should have been done to save her loved
one. However, she never experienced denial while grieving this loss.
Is she grieving "normally"?

Answer:

There is no such thing as normal grievance due to the fact that everyone is
different and may have different emotions. The five stages of the Kubler-
Ross theory are not fixed in order. Some may skip through the five stages,
or not experience some of the stages at all.

3. Why might one choose hospice care?
