1. follow 6 rights
2. perform 3 label checks
3. follow standard precautions (prevent spread of microorganisms)
4. perform hand hygiene
5. using unit-dose package: place unopened medication package in medicine cup (prevent
errors)
6. using multi dose bottle: pour tablet without touching it into cap of bottle (prevent
contamination)
7. pour tablet from cap into medicine cup
8. use separate cup for medication label it
9. break medication in half if needed. discard or put back in original container
10. difficulty swallowing: use a
-mortar and pestle

*mix with applesauce, yogurt, or other soft food (small amount)
11. return appropriate time to assess pt response to medication .
3 label checks of medication administration

NG tube placement check
Method A: attach a piston or aspeto syringe to end of NG tube. pull plunger back or release
suction bulb to aspirate stomach contents. If seen , instill 10-20ml of water to clear tube
Method B: push 10 ml of air through NG tube with syringe. rush of air is heard through
stethoscope
Method C: Litmus test. Measure pH with color coded paper.
