, PRACTISING FOUNDATIONAL COUNSELLING SKILLS IN A COMMUNITY-
BASED INTERVIEW CONTEXT

INTRODUCTION

This assignment presents a structured report on a one-to-one counselling interview
conducted with an individual in my community who is experiencing a personal
difficulty. The purpose of this task was to apply foundational counselling skills in a
real-world context, while maintaining objectivity, ethical awareness, and reflexivity.
The interviewee is not a friend or family member, and a pseudonym is used to
protect confidentiality.

The interview focused on understanding the individual’s lived experience of their
problem, exploring its emotional and social impact, and applying core counselling
micro skills to establish a supportive and respectful relationship. In addition to
describing the interview process, this report reflects critically on my role as a
developing counsellor. Particular attention is given to reflexivity, social context,
counselling micro skills, theoretical application, and ethical practice, including
confidentiality and informed consent.

This portfolio integrates practical experience with counselling theory from PYC3715
and relevant psychological literature. The aim is not only to demonstrate skill
application, but also to evaluate my growth as a reflective and ethically aware
beginner counsellor.

despite submitting multiple applications. Nomsa explained that her main concern is
