A: Context of Situation
The community was struck with a natural disaster. The hills around the community caught fire, burning
up many acres, including some homes and businesses. Some of the staff and students were involved with this
incident as some have lost their homes and pets, where some merely experienced some damage to their homes,
nevertheless still affected deeply by the fire. Some businesses and school have had to close down due to the fire
damage, which impacts some of the community. The students that lost their homes seem to have been impacted
the most, however, some are related to family and friends who have lost/damaged their homes and are now
staying with friends and family until they can return home. Some students have even come in restless and
unable to focus at school because of the stress they are experiencing from this event. They have had to bring
students from one of the schools that had been damaged, so classes have become more full than usual. As a
community everyone is pulling together to rebuild things back to normal.
B: Coping Stategy
My strategy to help the students cope with this impactful incident is to gently address the situation and
explain to them what has happened and what will be happening while the community can rebuild. We will
discuss how we can help others that were directly impacted. I would also discuss other natural disasters and the
overall impacts that can be made, as well as ways to prevent further impact of wild fires (like keeping yards
clear of weeds and safe habits around fire in general).
